MINOR EYE CARE SERVICE (MECS)
What is MECS?
If you are registered under a GP in the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bromley or Bexley, you have access to a free service that we now provide called MECS, which stands for Minor Eye Care Service.
There are a number of conditions which can be seen under MECS by our optometrist. If you believe any of the below describes your condition, you can contact us.
Medical conditions treated by MECS
- Red eye or eyelid
- Dry eye or eye discomfort
- Sudden reduced vision in one or both eyes
- Sudden increase of flashes and floaters
- Ingrowing eyelashes
- Foreign body in the eye
- Significant recent sticky discharge or watery eyes
- Recent occurrence of double vision
If you are unsure if you qualify for the above, you can contact us and we will provide help and advice. Remember, you may be entitled to this for free.
What happens during my appointment?
Our optometrist will discuss your eye history and symptoms you are experiencing. You will then have an eye assessment, advice about your current situation and any appropriate treatment. In some cases, a follow-up appointment may be necessary, which will be booked at the end of your first appointment.
In the event that your condition requires referral to an ophthalmologist, this will be arranged for you.
We ask that you bring in your glasses (if you are currently using one), a list of your current medication and your NHS number if possible.
